Some 200,000 people are to start receiving a tax refund from Thursday in terms of a government measure originally announced in the Budget.

Finance Minister Edward Scicluna told a press conference that all those who earned up to €60,000 euro, including those who did not pay income tax because of their low income, would receive a cheque from the government according to their income.

Those who last year earned less than €15,000 would receive a cheque for €68. Those who earned between €15,000 and €60,000 would get between €40 and €50.

The government's total outlay will be €11.4 million.
