Finance Minister Tonio Fenech has announced an increase of 5.8% in excise duties on each packet of 20 cigarettes. Excise duty on other tobacco products to rise by 8.5%.

The minister also announced a €5 tax increase per tonne of fuel used for bunkering of ships outside Maltese waters.

There will also be a €3 per  tonne increase in import duty on cement.

As from January, there will also be an increase in Vehicle Registration Tax on the importation of vehicles with emission standards of Euro I-II or III. Last year, the minister said, 19% of imported cars were of between Euro 1-III at the same time when the government wanted to remove environmentally harmful cars.
