A staggering 1,100 vehicles were registered in 19 days, between January 12 and 31, causing a bottleneck that the Malta Transport Authority is grappling with.

The number of registrations is quite considerable compared to the 1,013 vehicles registered in all of January last year.

Importers had waited for the change in the tax system announced by the government last year to register vehicles, causing a delay in the processing of online vehicle registration.

The authority has now said vehicles registered online will be processed by the Licensing and Testing Directorate by Friday.

The bottleneck is also a result of last-minute changes to the system and the need to test it.
