After losing their first four matches, Tarxien Rainbows collected their first point as they held Senglea Athletic in a 1-1 draw.

It was a fair result as Senglea were a better side during the first half but Tarxien, in their bid to avoid yet another defeat, showed greater determination on the restart.

Senglea had two changes from the team which defeated Birkirkara as Argentine striker Gonzalo Julian Leyton and Terence Vella replaced Ian Azzopardi and Hubert Vella. For Leyton, this was the first appearance in the yellow red shirt. On the other hand, Tarxien coach Jose Borg made no changes to the team which lost to Mosta last week.

Steve D’Amato’s side showed the better ideas and went close on the 5th minute with a powerful shot by Nicola Palmieri from the edge of the area which was neutralised by Cassar.

Senglea managed to take the lead on the 24th minute when Ivan Paz, served on the right, rounded a defender before hitting low past Cassar.

Just before half-time, Timothy Aquilina blocked into a close-range effort by James Brincat.

Eight minutes in the second half, Ricardinho went close with a low shot which scraped past the post.

The Rainbows levelled matters on the 67th minute when off a cross by Artur Benes, Ryan Darmanin anticipated two defenders and hit hard past the Senglea goalkeeper.

Tarxien were now creating the better chances and went close once again with a Ryan Darmanin effort which was parried by Aquilina on the 72nd minute.

However ten minutes from time, Senglea threatened once again when Caseres sent Terence Vella through but Cassar saved in two attempts.  In added time, Augusto Caseres could have handed Senglea the three points but his close-range header, off an Ivan Paz corner from the right, just missed the target.
