Tarxien 3

Msida St Joseph 1

Tarxien Rainbows stayed in contention for a place in the Championship Pool with a 3-1 victory over Msida St Joseph at the Hibs Stadium this afternoon.

Andrew Decesare gave Tarxien a deserved lead on 32 minutes, rifling home from an inviting position after Msida had partially cleared a close-range effort from Denni. Seven minutes from the end of the first half, Tarxien goalkeeper Anthony Curmi denied Msida an equaliser when touching away Matthew Borda’s dipping shot.

Ribeiro put Tarxien 2-0 up in the first minute of the second half with a firm shot from inside the box. Having missed a great opportunity to notch his second goal when his point-blank header from Gianluca Calabretta’s cross came off a post, Ribeiro sealed Tarxien’s win on 66 minutes.

The Brazilian striker headed in at the far post after Msida had failed to clear Justin Grioli’s corner. Msida got one back through Emiliano Lattes 17 minutes from time but Tarxien held off the Saints’ final efforts to secure an important win that takes them one point ahead of Hamrun Spartans.
