Civil servants who showed up to work up to four hours late on Monday due to the heavy rain and flooding would not be disciplined, civil service head Godwin Grima decided yesterday.

In a circular, Dr Grima said that “a large number of public service employees found it impossible to either leave their residence or arrive at their place of work on time”. Quite a good number of employees turned up for work when they saw the weather was clearing up and, in the circumstances, the delay was being considered “authorised absence”.

However, those who did not show up for work at all will be docked a day’s vacation leave.

According to the Met. Office, Monday was the wettest day in seven decades. Just over 102 millimetres of rain fell in Luqa in the 24 hours between Sunday and Monday, making it the second heaviest rainfall since October 26, 1939, when 132 millimetres were registered.
