The government has dropped plans to light up Castille Place from two tall structures in the middle of the square following criticism when the artist's impression was published, Infrastructure Minister Joe Mizzi said in Parliament.

He said the square will be lit up in a professional manner reflecting its history and the historic importance of the buildings located there.

A Swiss company, SPLD had proposed a lighting system for the square, including the facades of the Auberge de castille,  the Stock Exchange, St James Cavalier and the monuments, the minister said.

Replying to questions by Natioanlist MP Joe Cassar, he said work on the lighting of the facade of the Auberge de Castiile is being done by RVC Ltd, which was selected after a public call. The cost figure has not been concluded since the work is still in hand.
