The Nationalist Party has called on the Prime Minister to take action against MP Michael Falzon after he attacked staff members working with the Auditor General last night.

While the government was promoting the so-called Standards in Public Life Bill, Dr Falzon was persisting in his "ferocious attack" on the auditor's staff, the PN said in a statement.

Last night in Parliament, Dr Falzon accused public officials of acting in a partisan manner, also attacking the media in the process.

The National Audit Office had concluded last January that Dr Falzon had failed to safeguard the government’s interest by expropriating property belonging to Mark Gaffarena in Old Mint street, which served no identified public purpose.

"Will the Prime Minister take action following an attack unleashed against one of the few remaining independent institutions in our country," the PN said.

Joseph Muscat had "assumed control" of all the country's institutions, including the police, the Armed Forces of Malta, and the national broadcaster.

"Labour's attack against the Auditor General confirms that it doesn't believe in high standards for those who occupy the top positions."
