New traffic arrangements in Ta’ Xbiex were “imposed” by Transport Malta, the locality’s mayor Max Zammit told the Times of Malta.

A number of residents have complained about the incomprehensible road marking and lack of proper signage.

Heavy vehicles following a diversion up Triq l-Ambaxxati are having to reverse back down the road once they reach a tight bend that is a squeeze even for a normal car.

“Drivers of heavy vehicles and buses being unaware of this, after attempting the impossible, have to reverse back down the hill infuriating all the drivers stacked up behind them.

“This is all a result of bad planning at Transport Malta. They should have known that our street cannot take heavy vehicles,” one resident said.

Contacted, Mr Zammit said the council was aware of the difficulties being experienced by residents as a result of the traffic management system implemented.

Mr Zammit said the council had given its feedback following numerous complaints and was now awaiting a response from Transport Malta. “However, I would like to point out the fact that as a council, we were not involved in any of these changes and we strongly believe that future consultation between the authorities and the local council would be the best option in order to strike a balance between the citizens’ needs and passing commuters in general,” Mr Zammit said.

On its part, Transport Malta insisted all changes to traffic routes were made known before being implemented.

A spokesman said that alternative routes were being introduced to help alleviate traffic congestion better once roads are closed for the Kappara project.

“Triq ix-Xatt in Ta’ Xbiex will be converted into a one-way system towards Valletta. The route is earmarked as the exit route from the Sliema and Gżira area.

“Transport Malta communicated these changes, among others, during a meeting with stakeholders and a press briefing about a month ago.

“Transport Malta will continue meeting local councils concerned as it proceeds with the phased implementation of the changes,” the spokesman said
