Ta' Xbiex residents can take pride in their being named Malta's best local council for waste recycling at this year's Green MT awards.

With an average of 87 kg of recycled waste collected per person, the locality far outdid second-placed finisher Mgarr, which collected 61kg per person. Mellieha, with 60kg per person collected, finished third.

Green MT gathered over 4986 tonnes of recyclable waste across 28 towns and villages in Malta and Gozo. More than three-quarters of that waste came from household waste collection, with 21.6 per cent collected at bring-in sites.

Each tonne costs Green MT anything between €120 to €217 to collect, CEO Joe Attard said. Speaking at a press conference attended by Environment Minister Jose Herrera and Local Councils parliamentary secretary Stefan Buontempo, he called on legislators to make it a crime to not recycle.

Dr Herrera appeared to take Mr Attard's comments on board, saying that "we cannot keep procrastinating on certain decisions."
