Birżebbuġa councillor Hermann Schiavone will table a formal proposal for the council to adopt a Syrian refugee family in the wake of the crisis hitting central Europe.

“Faced with such a human tragedy we cannot remain passive. I will be doing my part. I will be proposing that the council adopts and finances a Syrian refugee family in our village,” Mr Schiavone said in a Facebook post uploaded yesterday evening.

He added that if every council were to follow this example, Malta would be conveying a strong message of solidarity to the rest of Europe. His appeal did not fall on deaf ears. A short time later Sliema councillor Michael Briguglio tweeted that he would be following suit.
