A Syrian tile-layer was granted bail today after being accused of driving without a licence and presenting false documents to the police.

Mohammad Dusho, a 25-year-old migrant, was stopped by the police after he failed to stop at a roundabout in Iklin, almost causing an accident, the court was told.

Police Inspectors Pierguido Saliba and Sergio Pisani explained that the van was found to be carrying four passengers but was not covered by insurance.

Mr Dusho was also found to be lacking a valid driving licence and had made a false declaration.

The accused pleaded not guilty and was granted bail against a personal guarantee of €1,000.

The prosecution challenged the decision, fearing that Mr Dusho might escape to Syria, but Magistrate Joe Mifsud said that that was not a likely possibility given the unstable situation of the country.
