A Syrian man who allegedly raised €60,000 in Malta to help families in Syria who are suffering because of the uprising, was arrested at the airport and had the money confiscated because he did not declare it to the authorities.

Khalil Hamed, 34, who lives in Sta Venera with his Maltese wife and family, had been nominated by Syrian residents in Malta to take the money to their families in Syria.

He was, however, arrested at the airport on Saturday afternoon.

Mr Hamed was arraigned today and pleaded not guilty to having failed to declare that he was carrying more than €10,000 in cash.

He was granted bail against a guarantee of €2,000.

The money will remain confiscated until judgement is passed.
