What a shame to see a woman swimming in such murky green water in the Tritons Fountain. Maybe the woman needed the money but that's not the point I'm trying to make. I am talking about the condition and unhealthy situation of the water. This fountain sits in view of the main gate of Valletta and it's in full view and walking distance of one of the most prestigious hotels in Malta, the Phoenicia Hotel. How can the government expect Maltese citizens to clean up their act when it does not clean up its own. Check this one out!
According to ministry spokeman Keith Galea, (August 18) the reason the press was informed about the clean-up this time was because "the ministry now has a good communications coordinator" and because the government was on a mission to promote cleanliness. Mr Galea should inform the minister that green murky water in the Triton Fountain does not promote cleanliness. And why is the government accommodating the radio station and contributing to this atrocity? Shame on you Minister, this is not promoting Malta in the least. I can remember when this same fountain was used as a political weapon, but now it's there and it's beautiful. If properly maintained and clean water is flowing, with lights on, in the evenings, it is a spectacular scene and nice to watch, it brightens up the whole terminal.
This is Malta's main bus terminal. Tourists and Maltese citizens alike end up at this terminal so maybe it would be worthwhile for the government to assign a custodian, policeman, warden etc, to tend to this fountain. If the radio station wanted to impress somebody, they should have donated the €1,000 to charity, but that will not get them much publicity.
I would still like to question why the permits for the swim were issued in the first place and who issued them?
Hopefully something good will come out of this incident, and from now on The Triton Fountain will be properly maintained and equipped with the proper filtration system.
