The 2017-18 season is proving to be yet another memorable one for the young players of Swieqi Phoenix Volleyball, with the club winning the Women’s First Division title for the first time ever, following their third successive Under-18 championship title in a row earlier this year.

Even more impressively, Swieqi Phoenix became champions while remaining unbeaten, having lost only one set in their 12 matches, this being the first set of their first match of the season.

Phoenix Sports Club President Orlando Bonnici stated that this achievement represents “a dream come true following five years of hard work”, as a result of which the team will play in the volleyball Super League next season.

He explained that these results reflect the implementation of a long-term project designed to build a strong foundation at nursery level.

“We are especially proud of the fact that the team which has won our First Division title is practically entirely made up of players who have come up through our nursery over the past five years.

This reflects our philosophy, as implemented by Head Coach Leonard Zammit Munro since its inception, and his team, to focus our investment and energy on the development of our home-grown young players.”
