A Swedish man was handed a suspended sentence after calling three police officers "every single name imaginable".

The accused, who works as a fork lift driver, admitted to the charges, saying "I've been stupid, I know that".

Magistrate Antonio Micallef Trigona heard how Lindgren Manu Juha-Pekka, 42, was arrested at the airport yesterday after he attempted to board a flight in a drunken state.

Prosecuting officer Silvio Magro told the court how, instead of calming down, the accused turned to police sergeants Noel Said and Dunstan Sammut as well as to himself, threatening to kill them and calling them names.

"He called me every single name you can imagine," Insp. Magro told the court.

"The accused told us: 'I've already spent 10 years in jail - and do you know why? Because I've already killed a man.'"

The accused was handcuffed and taken to the lock-up, where he attempted to punch one of the detention officers.

Lawyer Noel Bartolo pointed out that he was upset because his luggage had been lost.

The court handed him a €5,000 fine and a two-year sentence suspended for four years.
