Malta defender Jonathan Caruana has been suspended for one match following his red card in the 5-1 defeat to Scotland in Sunday's opening 2018 World Cup qualifier.

Caruana will miss the qualifier against England at Wembley on October 8.

Winger Luke Gambin's sending-off in the dying stages of Sunday's qualifier also triggered an automatic one-match ban but FIFA have informed the MFA that they are opening disciplinary proceedings against the Malta international based on the report of Ukrainian referee Yevhen Aranovskiy.

This means that Gambin's ban is likely to be increased.
