A 32-year-old Malian was given a 13-month jail term suspended for two years for making use of a false Italian driving licence in Malta.

Yusuf Traore, a failed asylum seeker who lives in Mosta, admitted making use of the false document, making a false declaration when he used it to drive in Malta, driving without a valid licence and the possession of a small amount of cannabis resin on Sunday at about 5.30pm.

Magistrate Natasha Galea Sciberras handed down the suspended jail term, fined him €200 for driving without a licence and imposed a €50 penalty for the simple possession of cannabis under the new drug law.

Police inspector Melvyn Camilleri prosecuted.

Lawyer Noel Bartolo represented the accused.
