A man who punched a warden in Floriana yesterday has been condemned to a suspended jail term.

Christian Mangion, 30 of Vittoriosa, pleaded guilty to slightly injuring the warden when he saw her giving his brother a fine for speaking on the phone while driving.

He was sentenced to two years in jail suspended for four years.

In handing down judgement Magistrate Aaron Bugeja said that unfortunately such cases were getting more frequent.

A situation where people sought violence was unacceptable. This court wanted to send a clear message that this behaviour could not be be tolerated.

Wardens, police officers and every other public officers had a right to go about their duties without the threat of being called names, hit or threatened.

On the other hand, the court needed to ensure  that the punishment was proportionate to the crime.

Sentence was delivered after the defence and the prosecution discussed the case at the bench for some 25 minutes.
