An English-language student from Kazakhstan was today fined €116 and given a 10-month jail term suspended for three years for attacking fellow students and threatening them with a knife.

The student, Aibek Manapov, 23, pleaded guilty to the charges yesterday.

The court heard yesterday how the student had been in Malta since October and was due to leave in March. Following this incident, however, he wished to return back to his country with immediate effect.

Prosecuting officer Jonathan Ransley testified that the accused was so drunk that a breathalyser test administered well after the man's arrest still registered him as being highly intoxicated. Prior to adjourning the case for today, the court remarked how the incident could have had much more serious repercussions.
