A policeman was condemned to a two year suspended sentence today after admitting that he stole two antique statues worth €50,000 from a band club.

A court heard Constable Christopher Agius, 36 of Birkirkara, plead that he resorted to theft because of financial difficulties

The constable, who is suspended from the force, is also facing fraud charges.

He stole the statues and other items from Duke of Connaught band club last Tuesday.

All the stolen items have been returned.

Police Inspector Chris Pullicino said Mr Agius's problems began when he separated from his wife and began a relationship with another woman. He got himself into a lot of debt and  his situation went downhill.

He was very cooperative throughout the investigation.

Lawyer Cedric Mifsud asked Magistrate Giovanni Grixti for his client to be given a chance, especially since he had a clean record.

The policeman was also placed under a supervision order.
