A suspected burglar was seriously injured early on Tuesday when he jumped or fell a height of two storeys, apparently to avoid the police.
The incident happened at about 1.30am when the police were alerted to a suspected burglary in a shop in Duke of Edinburgh Street, Ħamrun. A police patrol found the shop closed but heard noises inside.
The Rapid Intervention Unit was called to assist. Officers searched the area and entered a building behind the shop, in St Vincent Street.
The officers heard a noise of breaking glass and later found the man, a Romanian, injured in the yard of a garage behind the shop. An amount of cash was found in his possession.
He was taken to hospital where his injuries were described as serious.
