A sharp-eyed off-duty policeman this afternoon stopped a man from setting fire to the door of a home in Qormi, and arrested him after a chase.

The incident happened at about 3.15 p.m.

The man, who is from Zebbug, was seen setting fire to a ħasira (bamboo curtain). Upon being challeged the suspect, who is from Zebbug, ran off, with the policeman in pursuit. He arrested him shortly after.

A family and two GO workers were inside the residence at the time. The motive for the arson is not known, the sources said.

Magistrate Neville Camilleri is holding an inquiry.

Police investigations are being led by Inspector Sandra Zammit. The suspect is expected to be arraigned tomorrow.
