Forty bags each containing half a kilo of suspect gunpowder were seized by the Armed Forces of Malta after being discovered by a police patrol on Saturday night.

The bags, containing black powder, were spotted by a police patrol in Kalkara Creek between Vittoriosa and Kalkara. Some were on land and others in the sea. The police called in the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit of the Armed Forces of Malta at about 1 a.m. The bags were taken to the unit's base at Manoel Island for further analysis.

Duty Magistrate Joseph Apap Bologna was informed about the case. He appointed a number of court experts to assist in the magisterial inquiry.

The police are investigating.
