Roy Schembri Wismayer, Retired consultant haematologist and chairman National Blood Transfusion Service, writes:
Radio RTK in the mornings was for many years synonymous with Susan Mulvaney; and was the flagship for blood donations.
After a short spell of programmes with Mary Grech, and before programmes with Sonia Young , Claudette Pace and Christine Delicata, I had the fortune to have programmes with Susan Mulvaney on blood donation and blood transfusion, thanks to Tonio Bonello. This lasted for quite a few years, initially every week and later every fortnight.
It was a pleasure. It was also a very effective means to remind the few established blood donors and draw many new ones to the National Blood Bank in Guardamanġia.
Susan Mulvaney was a major contributor to the increase in blood donors, from a mere 6,000 in 1987 to 19,000 in 1997. She was awarded a trophy by the Malta Blood Donors Association, during one of the Thank You Evenings organised for blood donors and their families.
She even compered one of these Thank You Evenings, held at the Catholic Institute, together with the late Charles Abela Mizzi.
Many patients and I are forever grateful to her.
