Colette Sultana achieved her best result in international competition so far after she won a silver medal at the Welsh Open last week.

Competing in the U-15 category, Sultana won three matches and was only denied the gold medal by Egypt's Shahd Tarek Mahmoud who beat her in the final.

The tournament, which was held at the Welsh Institute of Sport and the Cardiff Squash Rackets Club, was strongly contested by nearly 200 players.

The Maltese junior champion did not have the ideal preparation for this tournament as she suffered a muscle strain but with support of the Maltese Olympic Committe she underwent intensive treatement to regain fitness.

Sultana had little difficulty in reaching the second round of the tournament after a straight-forward victory over Wales player Georgia Jones, 11/2, 11/4, 11/2.

In the next round she faced another Welsh player, Alice Richards. After losing the first two games 11/9, 12/10, Sultana had to really dig deep to save the match.

With the third game tied at 10/10, Sultana managed to recover from two match balls against her to finally take the game 16/14. From then on she overpowered Richards to win the next two games 11/5, 11/5.

In the semi-finals, Sultana faced top Welsh player Jenny Haley.

Sultana edged the first set 12/10. Haley came back strongly to win the second 11/6 but the Maltese girl bounced back to take the lead again and the third game 11/6. The fourth game was again close but it was Sultana who again finished on top, 11/9, to progress to the final.

In the final against Mahmoud Sultana put up a spirited showing but was eventually beaten 11/9, 11/8, 11/5.

With this result, Sultana will collect her highest number of European ranking points from a tournament and is set to break into the top 15 in Europe in her category.

While in the UK, Colette Sultana also had the opportunity to join a training session at Millfield School in Somerset.

Millfield is a private school that has excellent sport facilities and caters for the world's elite athletes.

The squash coaching team at Millfield is led by six-time former world champion Jonah Barrington.

Sultana's next ranking tour-nament will be the German Junior Open next month.
