The 2011 Mediterranean Horse-racing Union Jockey Championship gets underway tomorrow at Cagnes Sur Mer Racetrack in Nice, France.

Malta placed a merited second in last year’s championship after Morocco secured the title in the last leg, held on December 8 at the Ippodromo del Mediterraneo in Syracuse.

The results achieved last year are very encouraging as it is a discipline where Malta is rather short on numbers while other competing countries such as France and Italy have a large pool of experienced and professional jockeys.

Michael Sultana, the country’s top jockey last year, will represent Malta in the Mediterranean Championship. Sultana’s efforts and determination in the saddle have earned him a strong reputation, both locally and abroad as he gained victories in Belgium, Germany and Kuwait last year.

Sultana will be accompanied by Malta Racing Club (MRC) chairman Matthew Brincat who will be attending the council meeting of the Mediterranean Horseracing Galop Committee, being held in Nice today.

The racing calendar for 2011 will be finalised at today’s meeting. Officials will also discuss events and other initiatives between the members of the Mediterranean Horseracing Union.

The MRC has confirmed that the Maltese leg of the Med. jockey championship will be held at Marsa on March 31 along with the trotting drivers championship leg.
