Colette Sultana underlined her potential when winning the Irish Junior Open yesterday.

In the girls’ U-17 final, Sultana had the better of Ireland’s Breanne Flynn to inscribe her name on the coveted Irish Junior Open trophy.

Flynn started well, taking an early 4-1 lead in the first game but the Maltese junior champion kept her nerve to tie the game at 10-10 and went on to win it 12-10.

Sultana stayed on top, cruising through the second game which she won 11-4. The Irish girl hit back strongly to take the next game,11-9. Flynn led 6-4 in the fourth game but Sultana rallied to turn the game in her favour, winning 11-6 to capture the title.

On her way to the final, Sultana ousted another Irish girl, Orna Murray, 11-2, 11-5, 11-3, and Mary Lowe, of England, 11-2, 11-3, 11-2.

This was Sultana’s third European ranking tournament. She won the U-15 title at the Spanish Junior Open last year and, in 2008, took part in the Italian Junior Open.

Sultana is a member of the MOC Centre of Excellence and is receiving support from the MOC, Malta Squash and the Marsa Sports Club. She is sponsored by Wilson and coached by Paul Lake.
