The eighth edition of Festival Mediterranea, organised by La Stella Philharmonic Society, ended on November 21. This year's edition included concerts and recitals, performed by both local and international artists, public lectures and site visits addressed by leading archeologist David Trump, and a spectacular dance show, Unforgettable, by Centre Stage Dance Academy.

Without doubt, the festival reached its climax with the splendid double rendition of Giuseppe Verdi's Rigoletto, with the participation of a truly professional cast directed by Mario Corradi, the Astra Opera Chorus, ably prepared by Maria Frendo, and the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Malta, conducted by Joseph Vella, who will next year mark 40 years directing music at Gozo's Astra Theatre.

The appreciative audience that literally packed the theatre, had heartfelt praise for this production, which was surely Malta's operatic highlight of the year.

Festival Mediterranea concluded with La Stella philharmonic band, under the baton of its resident musical director, Prof. Vella, performing its annual grand concert at Astra Theatre, with a varied programme ranging from classical to contemporary music. The concert reached its peak with an impeccable performance of Tchaikovsky's Marche Slave and 1812 Overture.

Thus ended the eighth edition of Festival Mediterranea, a continuous series of cultural events spread over a month; another success for the La Stella Philharmonic Society.

Success, however, does not come without serious commitment, indispensable team spirit, and selfless dedication.

These three characteristics have guaranteed high-level productions in recent years.

May they continue to do so for the benefit of high culture on our little island of Gozo.
