Residents of Cospicua suffered damage to their electrical appliances this evening following vandalism at a sub-station which caused a power surge, Enemalta said.

The incident took place at around 6.30 p.m. when unknown persons forced entry into the sub-station at San Gwann ta' Ghuxa.

They deliberately cut and damaged the neutral connection of the transformer to the low voltage panel, which in turn caused an immediate increase in voltage going to homes connected to the substation.

Enemalta said this had reportedly caused considerable damage to appliances and electrical installations, and in some cases even to premises.

An inquiry has been launched and engineers are repairing the damage to the sub-station.

Enemalta said it was assessing the situation with regards to damages caused by this incident.
