I would like to support the sentiments expressed by Philip Muscat (November 12) on the suffering of Mcast ICT students. However, I believe that more are suffering than just students.

Take myself as an example. In August, I was in Malta for a holiday and to attend job interviews. I was interviewed for a teaching post with one of the five tendering training companies.

I got the job! (as did my wife). We returned to the UK, handed our notices in (approx €36,000 for me) and made plans to return to Malta on September 27.

We hired a removal company (€3,000) and sold our cars, as the Maltese import taxation was exorbitant. We put our house in the UK with a letting agency and looked forward to our new life in Malta.

Just before we left the UK, I heard from the company that was to be employing me, stating that there had been a delay and that we would not be needed for a couple of weeks. As this news was too late to stop us moving, we went ahead. Upon arrival, I went to see the owners of the training company for more information and as Dr Muscat stated, there had been an objection to the tendering process lodged with court and a police investigation.

As luck would have it, my wife secured alternative employment almost immediately. I, on the other hand, have not yet worked. It is now some six weeks since our arrival.

So, there are other sufferers, as my case is far from unique. I may be the only one that has travelled so far for a job but I am not the only lecturer affected by what can only be described as a power play.

I too would urge all concerned to get around a table and not leave till a solution is found. Education is supposed to be a positive experience; can we please try to turn this negative into a positive before it becomes too late for this year's students?
