Student organisation SDM has condemned the delay in the publication of resit results for secondary students and called for a review of the system.

It called a press conference after Matsec posted on their Facebook page that the September examination sessions results would be “published by the end of September”.

Students have been contacting Matsec, SDM and Pulse expressing concern about the unpublished results noting they needed them to apply for entry in higher secondary institutions.

“Unfortunately this has been a problem year after year,” SDM president Luke Muscat said. “In 2013, SDM had also condemned the late resit results. In 2014, the same problem occurred along with a sudden hike in examination fees,” he added.

There is no clear deadline, so they can play around with the date of publication

SDM vice president Ian Zahra said that although there was a clear deadline for the University and Junior College examiners to publish their results, the same thing cannot be said about Matsec. “There is no clear deadline, so they can play around with the date of publication,” Mr Zahra said.

“There needs to be collaboration between Matsec, the Junior College, Pulse and SDM.”

He said SDM was unhappy with the Matsec board’s suggestion in an e-mail to Pulse’s education coordinator Fleur Abela for students to directly contact the post-secondary or tertiary educational institutions.

Students should not have to contact the colleges directly for an extension of the application deadlines, Mr Zahra said.

SDM made three recommendations: that the exam results for this session be published immediately; that the system for publishing results be reviewed and possibly reformed and a clear deadline is set.
