An appeal was filed today by the defence team of 20-year-old Claudio Overend who was found guilty of slightly injuring two off-duty policemen.

They are claiming their client should have been acquitted.

Magistrate Edwina Grima had ruled an argument over a parking space between Mr Overend and Police Inspector Pierre Grech and PC John Farrugia was a “misunderstanding” and that Mr Overend was unaware they were public officers.

Mr Overend was found guilty of slightly injuring the officers when he resisted arrest.

The magistrate had the injuries suffered by the inspector were the result of a fall during the fight. The lawyers argued this indicated the injury, a grazed elbow, was never intended and so their client should not have been found guilty of causing it.

Moreover, the injuries were nothing compared to the onslaught Mr Overend received from the officer, who kicked the student who was on the ground.
