Daniel Scicluna Calleja, a Grade 12 student at San Andrea School, L-Imselliet, has won the first Concorso giovani ambasciatori della lingua Italiana nel mondo (Young ambassadors of the Italian language in the world).

He has been awarded a scholarship for a course in Italian at the Siena branch of the Società Dante Alighieri, which promotes the Italian language and culture worldwide, after he obtained excellent results in Plida, the society's official Italian language certification.

St Martin's College, Swatar, this year introduced the option for students to study the Plida syllabus, which is recognised by the Italian education authorities and universities, and by the Malta National Qualification Framework for Lifelong Learning. Fifteen local students sat for the exam this month, and a group of mature local students will be sitting for the commercial Plida exam next month.

The Malta branch of the society is offering summer courses at all levels from mid-July.
