Birkirkara gained sole leadership in the women's league after they defeated Mosta 1-0 at the Pace Grasso Stadium last Sunday.

Nadia Micallef netted the all-important winner that put the Stripes three points clear of second-placed Hibernians who have a game in hand.

The first half turned out to be a drab affair with Mosta creating the only real goalmouth action when a Jane Coates free-kick hit the bar.

The Stripes stepped up a gear after the break and on 58 minutes they took the lead when the Mosta goalkeeper failed to hold Deborah Pisani's shot, the ball fell into the path of Micallef who made no mistake from close range.

Mosta tried to produce a reaction but they were only near to an equaliser through a Coates' shot that finished just wide.

In the other match, Melita moved to fourth place after they easily defeated Rabat 2-0. Maria Azzopardi and Nadia Gauci scored the goals that put Melita in fourth place with six points.

Melita missed several goalscoring opportunities including a first-half Maria Azzopardi penalty.

Leading scorers: D. Theuma (Hibs) 4 goals; S. Caruana (Hibernians), E. Agliano (Birkirkara) 3; J. Vella (Hibernians), C. Fenech, D. Pisani (Birkirkara), S. Mizzi (Mosta), N. Gauci (Melita) 2.

Next fixtures at the Pace Grasso Ground: Sunday - 9 a.m. Hibernians vs Raiders; 10.30 a.m. Birkirkara vs Rabat.
