HSBC employees have been ordered by their union not to report for work before Wednesday.

The Malta Union of Bank Employees said the directive was being given after the bank threatened a lock-out for employees who obeyed its sit-in strike directive on Wednesday and yesterday, rather than making concrete counter-proposals.

The union said its sit-in directive was supported by the absolute majority of staff members.

In a statement on its website, HSBC said it was disappointed at the unions' continued actions as these negatively impacted its service to customers.

It said multifunctional ATM service was available at all branches and emergency cash withdrawals from the Paola, Valletta and Sliema branches where teller service was being provided during normal banking hours.
