Another 64 streets across the island would be resurfaced by local councils by the end of the year, Public Consultation Parliamentary Secretary Chris Said said.

He was speaking on a visit yesterday to road works being carried out in Ferdinand Von Hompesch Street, Naxxar.

He said that during the public consultation phase of the local councils reform, the government had felt the need to address residents' concerns about the state of their streets.

Local councils were for the first time allocated a total of €4.8 million towards the repair of 162 streets this year, on condition that funds would only be used on street repairs. A total of 64 streets in 32 localities remained to be resurfaced.

Dr Said encouraged local councils to resurface more streets in order to meet residents' expectations and give the best service possible.
