I was delighted to finally see the introduction of evening street sweepers in St Julians recently.

However, I was shocked to discover that this was only a temporary measure to impress the Italian President.

So my question is: Why are our streets swept only when overseas delegates come to visit and not swept for us citizens and the thousands of tourists that visit Malta every year?

I appreciate that an effort has to be made when dignitaries visit our country but surely its citizens and tourists should also be considered.

In my experience, there is nothing worse than visiting a place with beautiful beaches, lovely coastline and friendlypeople when you are also greeted with littered streets that are not attended to. Perhaps it is time that our streets are cleaned regularly rather than occasionally.

I would also like to mention that streets in the Tigné area in Sliema are left very dirty and litter is regularly seen in the area.

This is too important a subject to be swept aside! Let’s reclaim our streets and keep our country tidy.
