Solar Cinema today presents Encounters, a short film programme about strange rendezvous, in Birkirkara.

A collaboration of spoken word and song by Claire Tonna and Fatima will introduce the film programme. Both pieces explore the idea of experiencing the most unlikely of events on a luminous path in one’s life. Chris Galea will accompany the duo on piano.

The programme includes:

• Growth by Sil van der Woerd (the Netherlands), which portrays the rise and downfall of a family over the course of 20 years in one living room.

• Afterword by Boris Seewald (Germany), which sees Maltese actress Marama Cortlett preparing to make the speech of her life.

• Bullet Time by Frodo Kuipers (the Netherlands), a good old-fashioned Western shoot-out in which the fired bullets fall in love with each other.

• Two Strangers Who Meet Five Times by Marcus Markou (the UK), in which two strangers meet at five key turning points over the duration of their lives and initial conflict gives way to compassion and eventual friendship.

• Gaze by Farnoosh Samadi (Iran), about a woman who witnesses something happening in a bus on her way to work and has to decide whether to reveal it or not.

• Pollyanna by Roman Gubin (Canada) in which a young girl’s internal struggle is expressed through a contemporary dance.

• Lockbuster by Jonathan Elbers (the Netherlands), which follows a worker who dreams of living the blockbuster adventures of his favourite action hero.

The concept of Solar Cinema has been travelling the world for 10 years, bringing unseen films to unusual places, all powered by solar energy. This summer it is showing films across Malta and Gozo as part of Valletta 2018 – European Capital of Culture.

The free outdoor cinema event is being held today at Sir Anthony Mamo Garden (behind St Helen’s Basilica) in Birkirkara, at 8.30pm. For more information, visit the Solar Cinema Facebook page.
