Articles have been appearing in the papers about the millions of euros that airlines have lost because of the volcanic eruption.

I happened to be one of the unfortunate passengers visiting London at the time. Not only did I suffer frustration, panic and extra expense including mobile phone charges, but to my surprise, on going back to work I was asked to fill in a leave application for three extra days.

Fair enough, I did not work on those three days but neither was I enjoying an extra three-day holiday.

In the UK employees were given emergency leave as, through no fault of their own, they were stranded in other countries.

Could the government or any union elaborate on this matter?
