A man who was stopped for driving recklessly has ended up being arraigned for trafficking heroin.

Jason Caruana, 39 from Floriana, was stopped by the police after driving the wrong way up St Christopher Street in Valletta, a one-way street. Upon interrogating him, the police were quick to realise that he was behaving somewhat suspiciously, prompting the officers to conduct a search of his car, where the drugs were found.

Prosecuting offer Priscilla Caruana Lee charged Caruana him with heroin possession and with trafficking the drug. He was also accused of possessing cannabis resin, contravening a no-entry sign, carrying a knuckleduster and relapsing.

Defence lawyer Charmaine Cherrett told Magistrate Joe Mifsud that the accused was ill and was battling mental health problems. She petitioned the court to impose a provisional supervision order and grant the man bail.

The court did not uphold the request for bail but imposed a provisional treatment order to allow the man to receive the treatment he required.

The accused was remanded in custody.
