Stompers reversed the result from the league clash with Kavallieri to win the MRFU Cup 27-15 at Marsa last weekend.

From kick-off, Kavallieri imposed their power play on Stompers and after a long period of possession, they gradually worked up to their opponents' line and Doublesin scored an inevitable try. Micallef, however, missed the conversion.

Stompers replied with a smart interception by Cerketa who ran in from 30 metres as he pounced on a floated pass. This try was converted by Attard.

The pattern continued as Kavallieri bullied their way upfield but Stompers' clearing kicks were long and accurate to regain lost ground.

Veteran Robert Bonavia was then sin-binned. However, the Kavallieri pack raised their game to win ruck after ruck, and after Micallef put in a superb kick from full-back to gain some 60 metres, they scored a brilliant lineout maul try, driving over 30 metres for Borda to touch down and Kavallieri to regain the lead at 10-7.

Stompers made three substitutions, bringing on Pace Moore, Tonna and Gatt and this move raised their competitiveness up front as Attard drew the teams level from a penalty.

Kavallieri drove forward yet again but Attard made a superb swerving, pace-changing run which caught the opponents wide open. When stopped, he passed to the supporting Morton who flipped inside to Mirabelli to score under the posts just before half-time. Attard converted and Stompers went in for the break 17-10 in front.

The second half showed growing errors from both sides and Attard missed a penalty for Stompers.

Kavallieri's Vassallo was making some crushing tackles and knocking the slick Stompers backs off their game. One decidedly hard and doubtfully legal challenge meant Stompers fly-half Morton had to leave injured.

Kavallieri were on the attack but Stompers defended desperately and held them off.

Finally, Stompers broke out and from a quick Attard break, Matthew Camilleri was given room to score out wide.

Attard missed the conversion (22-10).

Kavallieri moved up a gear but simply could not break the Stompers defence.

At one point, Mirabelli made a rare bad pass which was dropped by Attard and Stompers found themselves under pressure. Kavallieri, however, knocked on when almost over the try line and the chance was lost.

Several close-range ball recycles gave Kavallieri hope, particularly when Vassallo powered his way to score an unconverted try.

But then, a long clearance kick from Attard brought the game into the Kavallieri half.

The Stompers scrum profited from a dropped catch and Attard worked a scissors movement, paving the way for Camilleri to run under the posts and secure the cup for his team.
