Child birth facilitators, or doulas, believe babies should be born at home and that science has overtaken nature but some doctors beg to differ, highlighting the dangers of taking births out of hospitals.

In the September issue of Pink magazine, distributed with The Times tomorrow, mothers recount the gory details of their home births – both accidental and planned – while the safety of the ordeal is discussed.

This edition also has a model slant, showcasing the Supernova competition winner, Jacqui Losco; highlighting the animal welfare cause Miss World Malta has adopted in a campaign that has her stripped to the bone and tied up to experience what abandoned dogs must feel; and also delving into the world of child modelling.

It may come as a surprise, but child beauty pageants are regularly organised in Malta and are open to babies as young as six months. And while the Children’s Commissioner believes such activities should be “disallowed”, the organisers claim child modelling is a great way of building confidence.

Pink’s focus feature looks into why the kids are willing to pose their way through childhood, the reasons their parents push them down the catwalks – sometimes even in prams – and the pyschological effects, both positive and negative, of it all.

Tomorrow’s issue also offers €300 worth of New Look shoes for a whole season of fancy footwear, as well as marking the start of the Search for the 2010 Nestlé Fitness Outstanding Woman, who stands to benefit from enriching lifestyle mastar classes and win grand prizes.

Fashion, health, beauty, books, food, fitnees and more are also featured extensively in the women’s magazine, published by Allied Newspapers Ltd and printed by Progress Press.

Pink is produced by Mediamaker, its executive editor is Fiona Galea Debono and it is designed by Helen Cassar Torreggiani and Joseph Schembri.
