Roads were significantly safer last year compared to 2009, with the number of reported traffic accidents dropping by 7.7 per cent.

There were 3,297 traffic accidents in the fourth quarter of 2010, a drop of 1,065 over the corresponding quarter a year earlier, according to the National Statistics Office.

Six passengers and 15 pedestrians suffered grievous injuries in the last three months of the year while 66 others (48 passengers and 18 pedestrians) were slightly hurt. A passenger and a driver died.

The highest traffic casualty rate in the fourth quarter was recorded on Saturdays, accounting for 19.2 per cent of total casualties. The highest accident rate was on Thursdays, totalling 544 cases, and the lowest on Sundays, with 309 cases.

Birkirkara registered the highest rate of traffic accidents, with 261 cases. Marsa and Qormi were next, with 220 and 196 respectively.
