Second Division

Vittoriosa Stars 1
Mellieha 4

Certainly, this was an unexpected setback for Vittoriosa Stars as the promotion seekers lost to unpretentious mid-table side Mellieha.

With one match to go now, they are equal on points with San Gwann in second place behind Tarxien Rainbows.

The northerners opened the score after 27 minutes when Adrian Galea scored from an indirect free-kick. Vittoriosa were unlucky to see a Tony Cachia drive hitting the Mellieha bar but a minute into the second period they managed to equalise through substitute Silvan Privitelli.

Those present expected an onslaught on the Mellieha goal but it was the latter who scored again after 53 minutes through Mario Debono who went on to increase Mellieha's lead to 3-1 soon after.

Vittoriosa were stunned and in a swift counter-attack Wayne Borg St John added to the Cottonera team's woes after notching his side's fourth goal.

Luqa St Andrew's 1
Tarxien Rainbows 4

Tarxien Rainbows notched up their 14th victory of the season at the expense of the already-doomed Luqa. As expected, Tarxien were the better team all the way and after taking a 26th-minute lead, through Jeffrey Zammit, there was no looking back for the newly-crowned champions.

Tarxien increased their lead soon after the restart when top-scorer Simon Shead found the Luqa net.

In the 64th minute Luqa reduced the arrears through a gem of a goal scored by James Galea and two minutes later they again went close through Godwin Pulis.

However, in the 77th minute Tarxien were awarded a penalty for a foul on Stefanovic. Shead made it 3-1 for his 27th goal of the season.

In the 90th minute substitute Brian Testaferrata added another goal for Tarxien - their 54th strike in 21 matches.

Referee: Mark Spiteri.

Attard 1
Zurrieq 4

The young players in the Zurrieq team gave another encouraging performance as they completely outclassed Attard to make sure of the fourth placing in the standings.

The Reds showed better ideas and took the lead from a penalty in the 26th minute through Justin Muscat.

Zurrieq then went close through Lia's close-range effort which was well saved by Spiteri but the latter could do nothing then to stop Matthew Genuis' first-timer - 2-0.

Attard's Joseph Casha reduced the arrears in the 35th minute from a loose ball. However, Robert Bajada made it 3-1 soon after the break and nine minutes from time it was all over for Attard when Muscat hit home the Reds' fourth goal.

Zebbug Rangers 4
St Andrew's 0

This was the Rangers' first victory in the second round as they hit four goals past a hapless St Andrew's side, two in each half.

In their first real attack on the Saints goal, Zebbug opened the score when Carlo Leonardi concluded a fine solo move. Then Zebbug wasted some easy chances to add to their tally but in the 44th minute they were awarded a penalty for a foul on Leonardi. Rangers captain Gordon Mallia made it 2-0.

St Andrew's tried to react after the half-time break but it was Zebbug who managed to score again in the 71st minute through Eric Sciberras. Five minutes from time Leonardi sealed the issue with his team's fourth goal.

Third Division

Fgura United 0
Melita 3

Melita made up for their upset to Fgura in the regular season with a sound 3-0 win last weekend to keep their promotion hopes alive.

The Amateurs dictated the run of play right from the start and were awarded a penalty midway through the first half for a foul on Matthew Borg. The same player scored from the spot to put his team ahead.

It was Borg's 16th goal so far this season.

Fgura's reaction was weak and just before the break a long clearance from Melita 'keeper Matthew Sapiano found Christian Glass unmarked to lob home Melita's second goal.

Fgura surged forward after the break and twice Sapiano had to be alert to deny Testaferrata and Gheiti from scoring.

However, all their hopes were dashed on 66 minutes when Borg headed in Melita's third goal from a perfect John Paul Naudi cross.

Referee: Kevin Azzopardi.

Kirkop United 1
St George's 2

An added-time Keith Darmanin goal earned St George's a priceless victory as they maintained a two-point lead in the play-offs pool ahead of Melita, their next opponents in a decisive clash on Monday.

The match had a low-key start. St George's went closest with a couple of dangerous free-kicks and a minute after the restart Darmanin's shot came off the upright.

However, on 52 minutes St George's took the lead when Emanuel Sevasta tapped home from a rebound after Mizzi had partially saved a Spiteri header.

The Saints then had a Vince Camilleri goal disallowed for an infringement with Kirkop drawing level on 62 minutes through Charles Pace from a free-kick action.

In the closing stages St George's assumed the initiative. Christian Grech fluffed an easy chance but Darmanin stayed focused till the end to hit home a very late winner for St George's.

Referee: Alan Mario Sant.
