A 16-year-old girl has been stabbed to death inside a Connecticut high school.

A teenage boy is in custody and police are investigating whether the girl was stabbed because she declined to be his date at the junior prom.

Emergency responders were called to Jonathan Law High School in Milford early on Friday. Schools superintendent Elizabeth Feser identified the girl as Maren Sanchez.

A 16-year-old boy was taken into custody, police chief Keith Mello said. His name was not released because of juvenile offender laws.

Staff members and paramedics performed live-saving measures on the girl but she later died at hospital, police said.

Students described an emotional scene with people crying as police and paramedics swarmed the school.

The junior prom had been scheduled for Friday evening but was postponed because of the stabbing.
