The debt left behind in St Paul’s Bay by the previous council amounted to nearly €500,000, PN spokesman David Agius said this afternoon.

Mayor Graziella Galea said that while it had ended 2014 with a debt of €150,000, it increased its expenditure in the first four months of this year taking the debt €425,000.

Moreover, it seemed that the council had not yet received all the bills for works which could have been carried out.

She said that while, because of this situation, it would be hard for the council to work for the benefit of the community, it would do its utmost for residents to get the best service possible.

Mr Agius said the government was not allocating enough funds for councils with many complaining they lacked the necessary funds to carry out basic daily work.
