A €1.4m extension to the promenade of St Paul's Bay was inaugurated this evening by Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism Mario de Marco.

The project was co-financed by the EU through the European Regional Development Fund and implemented by the Malta Tourism Authority.

The promenade was extended by 1km ina  project which necessitated the  reorganisation of underground water culverts, utility services and sewers. A  WWII machine gun post uncovered during the works was cleaned and restored, although it delayed completion of the project.

Dr de Marco said that this was one of a series of initiatives to enhance the tourism product.

The embellishment of this area marked the start of other projects which were lined up for the coming months and years including an aquarium and marine attraction in Qawra which will be set up through a private-public partnership agreement including EU funds.

Other projects will include the restoration of Madliena Tower together with the surrounding military structures. In Pembroke, a cycling track will be formed along with landscaping of a public area which will be transformed into lush gardens which will enhance the surrounding environment.
