Brooms were taken down to St Elmo in Valletta this morning for a clean-up organised by McDonalds and the Valletta council.

The event was organised as McDonalds clean up the community initiative.

The food chain said that as part of its commitment to local communities, it was this year organising a clean-up in eight localities around the Maltese islands.

"We are aware that people dispose of their waste irresponsibly and this ends up as litter.

"We feel that we all share responsibility for the unsightly problem as it becomes a nuisance and even a danger when it is ignored."
