A group of boys taking Italian as a language option in the middle and senior schools at St Edward's College, Cottonera, participated in an educational trip to Sicily to sample some of the diversity that makes Sicily a cultural treasure trove.

The first stop, after arriving in Pozzallo by catamaran, was the Zona Archeologica in Palazzolo Acreide, where the main attraction was the Teatro Greco, dating back to the third century BC. The group also visited the quarries, catacombs and Roman remains.

A drive through the Iblea mountains and the countryside of Ragusa was followed by a typical Sicilian lunch at an agrotourism resort on the banks of the Diga Santa Rosalia and a walk round the lake. The next item on the itinerary was a short visit to Ragusa Ibla, a Unesco World Heritage Site, to see the Duomo di San Giorgio, one of Rosario Gagliardi's Sicilian Baroque masterpieces, followed by a stop in Noto, the 'Stone Garden' of Sicily, another Unesco World Heritage Site.
